Question: how many people do you think that the earth can accomodate?

  1. Great question, desi!

I think the Earth is probably just about at maximum capacity!
I worked in agricultural science for a while when I lived in France and we would spend a lot of time debating this.

I think that we are having trouble sustaining our current population, with vast numbers of people in Africa and Asia living in poverty! Many experts say that we are vastly over populated, with estimated of the perfect population being anywhere from 500,000 million to 3 billion (current population = About 7 billion).

I think if we lived smarter, farmed and mined smarter,a dn took better care of the earth, by recycling and watching our carbon footprint the earth would be a lot better off!

What about you Desi, what do you think?

  2. Wow! We have really overshot the mark haven’t we.

The equation is pretty simple. Two billion people, all else being equal, put more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere than one billion people. Two billion rich people disrupt the climate more than two billion poor people. Three hundred million Americans consume more petrol than 1.3 billion Chinese. And driving a large 4WD in the city is much worse for the environment than taking the train.

I think we should aim to control population growth but also, more importantly reduce over consumption. This is something we can all do in our homes. Turning off taps, recycling, being mindful of our mode of transport, and eating sustainably. This way we can ensure we have a viable planet to live on for years to come.

  3. Although there is more “space” in the world, we are almost at the limit of sustainability with regards to food and the pollution that such a great population makes (cows that are bred for food alone have a great influence on the atmospheric polution!!!)

    Hope that makes sense 😀
