It’s mostly because of a phenomenon called “ovulation rate” which is the number of eggs that the ovary expels at one time! In humans, it’s usually just one, although when you get older, the ovary starts to get excited and worried and sometimes it does two, or three, which is why twins and triplets are more common in older women.
In mice for example, they can ovulate ( when the egg is released from the ovary) up to 20 at a time! So they can have many many more babies than a human. But their lifespan is much shorter, so they are in more of a hurry to get it done 🙂
