Question: What would happen if everyone in the world jumped

Keywords: ,

  1. Great question!

Well, I’d like to thnk that something really drastic might happen, but given we are all spread out over the whole surface of the earth, I’m not sure anything would happen! In fact, even if we were all in the same place, nothing would happen!

Would be cool if it bounced us all like a trampoline, though, right??

  2. All the earthworms would quake in their boots.

The real answer is….nothing. We’re very insignificant compared to the planet.

  3. If everyone in the world got together and jumped. Would the Earth move? Yes. Would it be noticeable?

Some people with a lot of time and brains have done this calculation and they say that the mass of the Earth is so huge that it’s pretty darn difficult to get a detectable speed of movement.

Also, there is the whole issue of getting everyone at the same place at the same time and getting them to jump at the same time. I have enough issues asking my students to be quiet in lectures.

  4. Wait, wouldn’t the fact that everyone hits the earth at the same time too negate the possibility of the earth “moving”. It is round after all (captain obvious!) 😀

    Answer: nothing! nothing at all…
