Hi Patrick,
Working with guts is definitely more interesting that I expected. I didn’t know much about the digestive system when I started working in the laboratory group during my honours year.
I did get to learn a lot about what the gut is made of, how different parts of the digestive system differ from one another and continue to be challenged to find out more about how the digestive system works.
I really do enjoy the practical aspect of research- getting my hands dirty (although we wear gloves!) and exploring all the layers of the intestine – did you know it is actually made of 5 layers (2 muscle 2 nerve bundles called ‘plexuses’ and the mucosa which contains epithelial cells that secrete various chemicals that help to break down your meal!)
