Question: How does caffeine affect the health of your gut?

  1. Hi Katnissmar and 123becca

This is a very interesting question and one which we haven’t really studied in enough detail.

Caffeine is a stimulant which means it acts to increase heart rate, blood flow, levels of sugar in your blood. It is also a diuretic which means it makes you go to the toilet more often and reduces the amount of water which is reabsorbed.

This means that caffeine acts on your large intestine to prevent water being reabsorbed. It also helps speed up the digestive process (increasing absorption which increases blood sugar levels) – which is why most people feel their guts become ‘active’ and need to go to the toilet!

Because of caffeine’s stimulant effects, it should only be consumed in moderation!!
