I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Hi gb0731,
Our research uses isolated segments of intestine from experimental animal models like mice and guinea pigs- which are studied because of their similarities to the human intestine.
We do not use human tissue because it is not possible to get healthy human intestine as it is not readily availability and it is not permitted for ethical reasons (it requires the removal of health gut).
Some of the research groups we have worked with in the past have taken gut tissue during surgery to remove diseased/damaged segments.
Hope this makes sense!
