Question: Would it be possible to connect yourself to a computer and power it? Because your body is powered by electrical impulses?

  1. Short answer: No.
Long answer: No, the computer needs a lot of energy/ power to make it work. The electrical impulses that you speak of are not the same as electricity that comes from the wall socket.

  2. I have always wanted to make a computer that you can power by walking or running! I thought that this might be a great was to tackle the obesity epidemic!

You have to walk or run to generate electricity to run the computer!

I’m not sure if it would even be possible, but it would probably generate more electricity than the impulses that your body uses.

  3. As Yash said…no. But I agree with Hannah. A bike powered computer (or better yet, TV) would be great! A friend of mine had a bike powered washing machine when I was a little kid. That’s a little less fun….

  4. At the moment no but there is a lot of really amazing research in the area of cybernetics!

Professor Kevin Warwick is one of the leading researchers in this area – (and also one of my favourite scientists!) He is known for his studies on direct interfaces between human nervous system and computers – trying to develop ways in which we can control computers by our thoughts or the other way around. He has also been quoted as wanting to become a cyborg and actually has a RFID (radio frequency implant device) implanted in his wrist and actually connected himself to the internet!

  5. It is possible to use the brain’s electrical impulses to control a computer. Scientists have shown that it is possible to use brain waves to steer a helicopter on computer screen. This obviously has potential for those people in wheelchairs.

But to actually provide power to a computer…. Hmm. I don’t think anyone has done this, because we are much more interested in giving the brain power, than taking it away.

Still, the approximate power consumption of the human brain is 30–40 watts and most laptop computers use about 15-60 watts. So the laptop would most likely drain all the power from your brain and you would be left with a working computer and no one to use it.
