Question: Why is the Skin referred to as an organ?

Keywords: ,

  1. Well, in biology, an organ is a collection of tissues joined in a structural unit to serve a common function.

And the skin is composed of many cell types that act to keep your insides, in, and the bad things out.

Did you know that the skin located under the eyes and around the eyelids is the thinnest skin in the body at 0.5 mm thick, and the skin on the palms and the soles of the feet is 4 mm thick and the thickest skin in the body.

  2. While technically not correct, it is referred to as the largest organ.
An organ is a structure that has a specific function and is made up of a collection of tissues. A tissue is ultimately a collection of cells. The skin is a structure made up of different tissues and functions in keeping foreign substances out of the body, and has a function in cooling the body (sweat).
    Hope that makes sense

  3. Ealry anatomists decided to call skin an organ- It’s kind of hard to know how to classify/group it. Skin is made up of many different layers of tissue and cell types and is part of what we call the intergumentary system- the physical barrier between the inside and outside of our body.
