Question: Why do you take pictures of immune cells and whole tissues

  1. Hi toffee,
Great question. We can look at cells in different layers of the tissue when we look at the whole tissue. If we did sections (cutting) and only looked at one at a time, we’d lose all of the information about where the cells are and what they were interacting with etc.
So imagine you cut a section from your hand, i’m talking about a very thin slice. Depending on where and how you cut, you’d see somethings and miss out on others.
So that’s why we look at the whole tissue.

As to why the immune cells, well i’m interested in how these cells communicate and act after sensing damage in your cornea (where they live). I’ve found that they can talk to each other via membrane nanotubes, and that they like wrapping around nerves (this is what i’m studying at the moment)

    Hope that answers your question
