The big spoilers on the back of race cars (the really fast professional racetrack sort) are actually to counteract the lift caused by the high speed and the shape of the car. Without them, the car would lift off the track a little bit…making it a bit hard to control.
The spoilers on street cars however are just for looks. And I have to giggle whenever I see a really big spoiler on a car that has never been in danger of becoming airborne….
