Question: How is the brain accessed in  surgery?

Keywords: ,

  1. Good question!

There’s 2 main ways that the brain is accessed.

The first way is through the skull, which means that they have to use a saw to cut out a piece of bone and then they stick it back in there when they are finished!

The second way, which i find absolutely fascinating is that they can get in their through the nose (the doctors call it “endoscopic endonasal”)! They can stick their little tools in there and get to the brain. And it’s great, because they hardly do any damage, and don’t have to drill a huge hole in the skull!

    Still blows my mind.

  2. It really depends on the type of surgery.
Usually the skull has to be cut open to access the brain.

  4. Tee hee Carina. Funnily enough, you are almost correct. Through the leg!

There is such a thing as brain surgery without the surgery. There is a device that is designed to help doctors open up clogged blood vessels in the brain. These clogged blood vessels cause stroke and brain damage. This device is called the Wingspan intracranial stent and it’s a tiny wire mesh tube that can be fed into the body through an incision in the leg, threaded up through the blood vessels in the chest and neck, and inserted into the brain. Wow!
