Question: How big can your pupil get

Keywords: , ,

  1. The pupil is a name given to the whole in your eye that is controlled by the iris (the coloured part of your eye). It controls how much light get through to the back of the eye. Your pupil gets big when it’s dark, allowing as much light to get to the back of the eye so you can see clearly. There is a limit however to how big it can get, as the iris can open the whole to a certain degree. It doesn’t need to open it past this anyway as it’s enough to see if there is any traces of light in the area.

  3. That’s pretty cool Yashar!

There’s also a reflex test doctors use to find out if the brain is damaged, by looking at how big the pupil is. If the muscles around the iris relax and the pupil shrinks when you shine a light- I think it’s called the “pupillary reflex”. If there is brain damage- the pupil doesn’t shrink because the message doesn’t get to the brain to make the iris muscles relax.
