I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Yes. Not only do the chemicals in tobacco smoke harm your blood cells, they also can damage the function of your heart and the structure and function of your blood vessels. A waxy substance called plaque (pronounced: plak) builds up in the arteries around you heart. The plaque then hardens and narrows your arteries which then limits the flow of blood (full of oxygen) to your body. This then leads to chest pain, heart failure (can’t pump the blood anymore) or a heart attack (the heart doesn’t get enough blood itself). Reduced blood to your body also causes large amounts of your bodies tissue to die, which is known as gangrene. Gangrene itself is life-threatening (aside from the disgusting fact that your flesh is literally rotting!)
Soooo, all in all, smoking is not good. Yeah.

Yes!
Tobacco plants contain nicotine- a psychoactive drug which has an effect of increasing heart rate, breathing rate and overall alertness as the nicotine stimulates these processes (by increasing the information signals to your brain).
The is particularly nasty because it is addictive- so people who smoke find it hard to stop and want it more because it keeps them alert. The problem is the nicotine is actually damaging the nerves which send signals between your heart and brain and Yashar has described – in the long term it leads to heart disease and increases your risk of developing other diseases such as diabetes, emphysema, lung cancer, heart attack and stroke.
