Question: Do adults or children have a stronger immune system?

Keywords: , ,

  1. Depends on the age of the adult and the age of the child.
Very young children, and old adults both have a relatively poor immune system. Young adults have the strongest.

  3. Interestingly, very young babies that are breastfeeding are mostly still working off the mother’s antibodies…both from before birth when the mother and baby shared blood, and from the breastmilk itself.

  4. Agree with Yashar and Carina! Young adults have a stronger immune system!

The immune system develops over time so babies have acquired natural immunity from their mother but this is not permanent. We get our immunity and develop our immune system through exposure to pathogens (experincing a cold) and building a library or memory cells – antibodies which help remember and prevent you from getting sick from the same thing in the future.

If you are immunocompromised – that is your immune system is not working 100% (both adults and children will be susceptible to illnesses eg. during chemotherapy or people who suffer from AIDS, auto-immune diseases).
