I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Great question!
It’s a very tough one to answer, though. There’s lots of things that can cause miscarriages, but generally you can think of it like this… Whatever the cause, the reason that miscarriage occurs is usually because there is something wrong with the foetus.
The good news is that while it does happen, that generally it doesn’t happen over and over again for the same person. We call this “recurrent miscarriage”. We know that there are some situations where this happens, though, and it often happens because of some genetic reasons (mistakes in the DNA) and sometimes because the immune system (the white blood cells) make a mistake and think the baby is a foreign parasite! We don’t really know why this happens yet, but I have some friends here in Adelaide working on it!
