I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts ย of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Yep, i have a PhD.
To get my PhD, firstly i have to go to university to get an undergraduate degree (which is for 4 years). Here i learned about lots of different areas of science and i got an opportunity to try lots of things before i decided which area i’d like to work in.
Then I could enrol in my PhD. It took me three more years at university to get my PhD. To get it, i had to do a research project, where i designed my own experiments and tested them in the lab every day, and then i had to write a book, called a thesis, to tell people about the experiments i had done. It was actually just like going to work and being a scientist every day. I had to take a few classes, but mostly i did pracs in the lab. At the very end, i had to give a presentation about the experiments i did.
It was a really great time in my life! I loved my PhD, and its actually not too different from what i do every day now. I still do experiments every day, and i write about them and talk about them, but now i am the boss! ๐

I’m in the process of getting mine.
In my 3rd year. It’s taking ages and it’s hard!
Will leave it there ๐

Yes, I have mine. The research was fun, and to be honest, it was probably the easiest job that I’ve ever had!

Hi coolbro,
I don’t have a PhD. Most of my friends who studied science however do have PhDs. I decided I didn’t want to do it – but that doesn’t mean I haven’t ruled it out for the future- I’m waiting for the right project!
I finished my honours year and actually studied something else before coming back to work as a researcher.
There are actually other avenues for you to pursue if you want to do research (research assistant, laboratory manager, laboratory technician) but a PhD definitely helps you to understand a specific area of research in great detail and let’s you progress much further with research if you want to work towards running your own lab some day! ๐

Yep I have a PhD. I spent a lot of time at uni, a lot of time thinking and doing experiments again and again. It was really tough at times but I also got to decide what I was doing, and when I was doing it. That sort of flexibility regarding time and intellect doesn’t exist in any other job.
At the end of it I got to hold a book that I wrote and wear a silly floppy hat that made me so proud I swelled inside. I don’t think I’ve ever been that proud of anything else I’ve done. ๐
