My work into membrane nanotubes (the first of the 2 pictures showing cells in my profile) actually shows that this event can happen anywhere in the body. What this means is that the transmission of virus between cells through the nanotubes can spread in a similar way in other parts of the body.
So short answer: yes (kind of :D)
