I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Some scientists have found that children with autism have different brain activity in the amygdala, the brain area that co-ordinates emotional responses.
Using brain imaging, the scientists looked at how kids with autism could judge from the expressions of another person’s eyes what that other person might be thinking or feeling. In this study, kids with autism did not use their amygdala when guessing what the person was thinking by looking at their eyes. Kids without autism did show amygdala activity.
Other scientists think that whole brain differences are more likely, in particular in the connections between neurons.
