Question: What is inflamation and how does it effect our eyes?

  1. Hi cornchip,
    Great question!
Inflammation is your bodies protective attempt to clean and remove bad things from the site of injury, and to start the healing process to fix any damage. So if you injure your eye, it will get inflamed in the hope of fixing any damage and whats gone wrong within the eye. If everything works well, and the injury is not that bad and the injured eye tissue can be healed, then everything’s fine and goes back to normal (no more inflammation).
However, if this doesn’t happen because there’s a lot of damage to the eye or the wound cannot be cleared/cleaned easily, then your body will make the area more inflamed to try and fix the problem/s (it’s just how the bodies defense works). When inflammation goes out of control, the white blood cells that come in to fix things, actually start to make things worse! This happens in all parts of your body, not just the eye, and is why you need to see a doctor if things are healing right… The doctor would then try and decrease the inflammation (stop any damage to the area) and try to help fix things him/herself…

    Hope that makes sense 😀
