Question: Why do you describe guts as wriggling?

  1. Hi datchihuahua22!

Thanks for the cool question- your digestive system works by moving an ingested meal along a 7 meter tube which breaks down and absorbs nutrients and removes waste. Our guts are constantly receiving information from our brain and from the enteric nervous system (ENS) inside the muscle layers in the gut wall. This makes the muscle move to squeeze (contract) and relax in a coordinated rhythm that helps to push food along the intestine- if you see a video of this as I do in my experiments, it looks like the gut is wriggling!
