The appendix is what we call a ‘vestigial’ organ – meaning it has lost its important function that it served our ancestors in the past (we can have it removed if it becomes infected as in ‘appendicitis’.)
Recent research has revealed the appendix still plays an important immune role – mostly in helping you fight infections and maintains the beneficial bacteria which live and work in your large intestine/colon.
