A hemorrhage is bleeding in the brain. A haemorrhage is a type of stroke. Brain tissue is very sensitive and can be damaged by hemorrhages or strokes. The uncontrolled bleeding often causes pressure in the brain, squeezing the brain cells which can then cause irreversible injury. The pressure may also lead to a loss of blood supply to brain tissue which means no oxygen. Brain cells need oxygen and will die after a few minutes without it.
Risk factors for strokes are high blood cholesterol, diabetes, cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol consumption and drug use, a lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet. So the message is stay healthy and active!
