I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
Hi meemee,
Great question! First I need to point out that there are a variety of reasons why people become blind. Macular degenerations and cataract are ultimately symptoms of old age I’m afraid. Other things like corneal haze which leads to blindness may in fact be “cured”. I, along with others in my lab and many others throughout the world, look at the cornea to trying to find out how things work in a normal cornea, and how things change which lead to the cornea’s structure changing which leads to a change in the cornea from nice and clear, to disorganised and hazy! So in part, I am helping extend the knowledge of what’s normal and the workings of the cornea that will hopefully help us find a way to reverse or fix any complications that lead to corneal haze and blindness.
To summarise: Scientists work together to increase the understanding of how things work. Each furthering the knowledge with the hope that their work allows either directly or indirectly affects helps fight debilitating diseases or problems. My work will not directly lead to a cure for blindness, but it does answer a lot of questions and will change how other scientists think.
