Question: what is an hemorrhage in the brain

Keywords: ,

  1. A hemorrhage is bleeding…so a hemorrhage in the brain is bleeding in the brain. Generally not a very good thing to have happen! Uncontrolled bleeding in the brain can put lots of pressure on various parts of the brain and can lead to all sort of bad complications. You may have heard of strokes…this is a type of stroke.

The old cure for that was to drill a hole in the skull to let the blood out (and release the pressure). Cave men used it (we’ve found skulls with holes drilled in them that have started to heal over…so the person lived for a little while after having their skull drilled!). In fact, it’s the oldest surgical procedure that we have evidence of!

These days, our surgical techniques are a little more gentle, and there are some other options, depending on where the bleeding is and how severe it is.

  2. Hemorrhage is another word for blood coming out of the blood vessel inside your body. The important thing is to stop the blood loss before it gets out of control, and damages the tissue around it, or you lose too much blood as a result; both of these is bad!
Brain hemorrhage can be caused by anything from head injury/trauma (a massive knock to the head) to high blood pressure (too much fatty foods etc).

  4. I think a brain hemorrhage (haem- Greek for blood) is a type of brain aneurysm (dilation/widening of blood vessels) that bursts. This occurs most commonly in an area of te brain known as the circle of Willis or in the internal carotid artery which can lead to increased pressure in the brain and cause great damage.

There’s also an Italian heavy metal and (influenced by Metallica) who have the cool name of Aneurysm!

  5. Brain tissue is very sensitive and can be damaged by hemorrhages or strokes. The uncontrolled bleeding often causes pressure in the brain, squeezing the brain cells which can then cause irreversible injury. The pressure may also lead to a loss of blood supply to brain tissue which means no oxygen. Brain cells need oxygen and will die after a few minutes without it.

Risk factors for strokes are high blood cholesterol, diabetes, cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol consumption and drug use, a lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet. So the message is stay healthy and active!
