Question: How would the gut you video'd still wiggle if the animal was dead?

  1. Hi jjbear and meemee- thanks for the interesting question!

The tissue can still ‘wiggle’ as it is kept alive in a bath containing a mixture of salts and water (to create a solution similar to that inside your body) after we have removed the intestine from the animal. The intestine is kept at the same temperature as it was in the body and has oxygen delivered to it to keep the conditions as similar as what would be inside the animal.
