Question: I think it is important for not only scientists to know about the new stuff on autism but also school teachers, what do you think?

  1. I think information is powerful, and everyone should have access to the most information that they can. The trick comes with the communication of the facts. Sometimes the media does a terrible job of reporting science stories (maybe most of the time!). I would want teachers to have the real facts, from the source. As scientists, we have an obligation to make sure that the information gets to the right people in the right way. We can’t trust journalists to provide us with all the information that we need. Luckily, teachers do lots of professional development classes, led by experts, so they usually have a pretty good idea of what’s going on!

  2. Absolutely. My Mum is a teacher, and she’s always learning new things, including about austism.

Here is Adelaide, we are lucky to have a group of hard working people at Autism SA who provide lots of information for people on autism, and help to educate teachers and carers.

  3. Absolutely! I think its important for everyone to know about Autism. I work with a woman who has Autism and who is also a scientist. Before I knew that she has Autism, I was confused when she didn’t look into my eyes, or even at my face when I was speaking to her. I thought she might not be interested in what I was saying. I was even more confused when she would avoid me in the corridor when I said “hi”. Later she explained that she finds it difficult to recognise people by their faces. Now when I approach her desk I always make sure I speak first so she can recognise my voice. Knowing about how differently she sees the world has helped me to work better with her.

My mum is also a teacher and works very closely with kids with Autism. She is constantly asking me about the new stuff I’m reading in science journals. She is very interested in science.

  4. Hi josehalapeno- great question!

Yes, as the others have explained nicely- the more awareness we have about autism (and information from good research!- autism research can be messy because people don’t really understand much about it), the better equipped we are with helping people who have autism to lead a rewarding life!

  5. Absolutely agree Jose.
    Scientists are research autisms.
In the meantime, it would be a great shame if the adults, the parent and the teachers, didn’t know how to handle or even correctly communicate with an autistic individual.
    Completely agree
