I’m a Scientist is like school science lessons meet the X Factor! School students choose which scientist gets a prize of $1000 to communicate their work.
Scientists and students talk on this website. They both break down barriers, have fun and learn. But only the students get to vote.
This zone is the Organs Zone. It has scientists studying health and disease in various parts  of our bodies. Who gets the prize? YOU decide!
A cat’s skeleton varies a bit…some have no tail, and some have extra toes! But cats have between 230 and 250 bones in their bodies. Human beings have about 206 bones. The extra bones that a cat has are mainly in its backbone (and tail!)..cats have 53 vertebrae, and we only have 32-34. The extra bones make a cat’s backbone much more flexible than ours! The extra bones in the cat’s skeleton are found mainly in the backbone, which gives the cat its extra flexibility and agility. Humans have collarbones, while cats do not. However, cats do have a free-floating set of bones in their shoulders that allow them to worm into any space into which they can fit their head.

Nice work, Carina!
This got me thinking about other animals, so i looked up dogs.
It turns out that a dog has 319-321 bones in its body, which is about 115 more than humans. WOW!!!
The length of the tail is the only thing that causes a difference from one breed to another. Long tails contain more bones than short tails.
Cool, hey!!

That’s a great question!
Did not know those facts about the cat skeleton but thanks Carina (and Hannah – didn’t know that about dogs either!)!

To add another critter to the list. Mice have 206 bones in their bodies, like us, but also have an extra 25 bones in their tails.
